World Cup: Portugal/North Korea under 2.5 -130

I was absolutely shocked to see this total cone in at two PLUS THE HOOK. Sure you have to pay a bit to play but this could very well be the total of the tournament. Portugal was lucky to come away with scoreless draw with the Ivory Coast being outplayed for much of the game. The Portuguese are extremely sound defensively but have an anemic offense that relies solely on the imagination of Christiano Ronaldo. The North Koreans were arguably the most impressive of the Cup’s second tier and played stone wall defense in a 2-1 loss to tournament fave Brazil. In fact, Brazil’s goals came on amazing individual efforts by Macion and Erano. This will be like Ubaldo Jiminez pitching against the Padres, very few chance and even fewer rewards. Play the Under.

Indianapolis 500: Take Helio Castroneves at 5/2

No brain surgery here as Castroneves was much the best in qualifying and has the pole in a race where only five cars  have legitimate shots to win. This would be Spiderman’s fourth win after winning first two tries in 2001-2002 and then last year putting him in the rare air Al Unser, AJ Foyt, and Rick Mears. Team Penske has been so dominant that to get the #3 at 5/2 or 2-1 would be a huge overlay as only an accident, unforseen, mechanical problems, or tear gas can keep this guy from getting to the checkered flag first. If this was paramutual, he’d be 2-5. Get your ticket, pick up a six-pack, sit by the pool and double your money before the charcoal is ready for the brats, steak, and chicken. Don’t forget to thank a vet.

MMA: Rashad Evans -105 over Rampage Jackson UFC 114 Las Vegas

No love lost in this battle of light heavyweights. Both fighters are excellent strikers though Rampage may have somewhat more pop and Evans chin is somewhat suspect. That said, Evans is by far the better wrestler and might just try to take it to the ground and keep it there. Jackson has not fought in 14 months while filming “The A-Team” and his conditioning could come into play. This fight was supposed to take place about a year ago and if it had, Jackson would have been closer to a $2.00 favorite than the 25 cents he is here so not much value with Evans. With the standup basically even, give me the good ground-and-pound guy who has been busy against top flight competition. Rashad Evans by decision.

Arizona (Kennedy) +126 over Colorado (Chacin) 8:40 PM EST

Ian Kennedy was the odd man to Phil Hughes in the battle of Yankee pitching prospects but has seemingly found a home with the Snakes. Kennedy rocks 2-1 W/L and 1.93 ERA over his L4 starts and vultured a win by the “arson squad”, the Arizona bullpen. Jhouls Chacin has been good in his five starts but in his only start at Coors Field, was beat about the head by the Nasty Nats. Arizona has had success in the series (25-14) and at Coor Field 12-9. Thinking Arizona could be a very live dog here. Take the Snakes.

The Mack Attack now 9-3 after last night’s never-in-doubt winner on the Over … C’mon … lighten up. Nothing left to chance on tonight’s Lakers/Suns Game IV slam dunk that you can Watch and Win on TNT. You WILL cash your ticket or you play on Wednesday on DMack. Just pick click and cash!

135th Preakness Preview

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Sorry that this somewhat late. Writing about two hours before post.

Twelve colts go to post in almost perfect conditions in the 135th edition of the Preakness. The Mack Attack likes

Win: #7 Lookin at Lucky: This horse has been anything but lucky. He’s had road troubles and was buried in the Derby after drawing the disadvantageous rail. Jockey switch from Gomez to Garcia might give this one a spark and will have no excuses for not living up to early hype with win here.

Place: #8 Super Saver: This is a nice horse that absolutely loves off tracks and had things all his own way while being perfectly handled by Calvin Bo-Rail. Jock says this one is first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed. Horsespeak ??? Everyone on a level playing field here. We’ll see.

#6 Show: Jackson Bend: Throw out terrible Derby. This horse will be winging it to the top today and has five wins at more than a mile. He has five wins at a mile or more. Hasn’t won as a 3YO but figures for a piece here.

Longshot: #12 Dublin: If you throw out three off-the-board performances at Churchill Downs. Dublin is five for six in the money running against many of these. Gomez takes over and might be steaming for being taken down off Lucky. Expect big effort.

That’s it from the Mack Attack. 7-8-6-12 is your Preakness Superfecta. Good Luck at the track!

Take Northeastern +8 over UConn

Jim Calhoun is one tough S.O.B. Twenty-three years in the books, 574 Huskie wins, and MAJOR health problems, this has to have been unquestionably the most disappointing year in Calhoun’s 37 years as coach. Ranked 18th by Blue Ribbon at the start of the year, the Huskies did not show up to play more times than they did. The team has talent with Kemba Walker, Jerome Dyson, and Sidney Robinson but after early wins over Top Ten opponents, SOMETHING went terrible wrong. Four straight losses down the stretch including 20-point loss to South Florida in the first round of the Big East. With a team that so obviously has quit, I was somewhat surprised they accepted an NIT bid. Calhoun got his start at Northeastern many moons ago. Northeastern is feisty bunch, particularly on the road. The NE Huskies are a veteran crew that run a patient half-court offense at a snail’s pace. Taking the air out of the ball will not only limit UConn possessions, it will neutralize UConn athleticism and possibly frustrate a team that for all purposes has already mailed it in. Recommend taking the points in a game that figures to fall in the 50’s or low 60’s. Take Northeastern.

Take Eastern Illinois -1 over Austin Peay

Austin Peay won 73-60 in Clarksville all the way back on December 9th. This is a very different Eastern Illinois Panther outfit at this point however. EIU has won five straight games, covered last four as a OVC favorite, and 9-3 ATS in L12 games overall. Matchup is a dicotomy of styles as the Guvs like to get up and down while the home team big on “D”ing up. That said, Eastern avgg 76.8 ppg on 53.3% shooting while still holding opponents to a tick better than 40% shooting from the field. Peay has been dominant in the series winning six straight and covering four but over time, Charleston has not been real hospitable (4-9) to the Guvs. Red hot team at home, with revenge, and a chip on their shoulder. Eastern Illinois makes a lot of sense.

Take Princeton -6.5 over Penn

The Princeton Tigers lost their showdown on Saturday with Cornell but still in the Ivy League hunt thanks to Penn taking down Big Red on Friday as a 17-point dog. What was so remarkable about the 4-16 Quakers springing the upset was that Penn didn’t have a win against a top 250 RPI. Not ones to stand prosperity, Penn lost as a 5-poing home fave to Columbia Saturday. Princeton didn’t get off to a good start in non-conference play but have turned thing around in league. The Tigers are 8-4 versus the points on the road and have been an excellent bully going 5-1 as a fave and 6-1 ATS vs. sub .500s. Princeton MO pretty much the same with their slow down offense and a stifling (for what they are) defense that allows just 45.6 ppg on less than 40% from the field. Cornell has two games in hand over Princeton who has to win it’s make ups. Penn is obviously capable of upset so expect focused business like effort from Tigers. Princeton 63-51
