Saturday, June 19th, 2010World Cup: Denmark pick -140 over Cameroon
The Danes cruised through qualifications and were most pundits “sexy” underdog shocker along with Chile. Denmark couldn’t have been unluckier in Game I, first catching a very tough Netherlands in the opener, then playing the Dutch square before own goal proved to be their undoing. Denmark has solid World Cup pedigree with the likes of the Laudrop brothers and Lars Preben Elkjaer terroring opponent goals in the 80’s and 90’s. The African contingent has been disappointing this year with just one win in nine matches at this writing. The Indomitable Lions can’t run out Roger Mila here and man-for-man, Cameroon does not match up well. In this loser go home match, Denmark pick minus change looks like one of the easier plays in the tournament.

Sunday, June 13th, 2010World Cup: Germany -1 (-125) over Australia
Big impost here with a basically shorthanded favorite but … Germany is one of those teams and one of the few Euros that always seems to just come up money in tournament action. In 2006, Klinsmann guided a young inexperienced club to a third place finish on their home turf. That foundation, sans oldies Ballack and Klose, and new fresh legs on the back line should get the Fatherland easily through matches like these. The Germans blasted Costa Rica 4-2 in their 2006 opener and face a defensively challenged SoccerRoo outfit here. This Aussie crew is game as always but nowhere near as good as the group that almost took down the Italians in 2006. Germany 3-1.
Day One, 2010 World Cup, June 11, 2010
Friday, June 11th, 2010It’s Day One of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. I had hoped to do a lot of work to post here and at other sites but circumstances have dictated otherwise. Just to get my picks “On the Record”, here we go.
My soccer qualifications ??? I lived in Italy for 13 years, Costa Rica four years. My father was on the medical staff of AC Roma and second division Ternana for more than 25 years before passing.
Day One Selections:
Mexico pick -135 over South Africa
Over 2.5 Mexico and South Africa +135
Uruguay +0.5 -110 over France
After an uncharacteristic slow start, Mexico was playing as well as anyone in the Concaf qualifying region and should be considered one of the more dangerous second tier teams. They are in the unenviable position of of facing the hosts on opening day in front of 90,000 fans that will be even more amped by the tragedy surrounding Nelson Mandela’s great-granddaughter who was killed by a drunk driver after last night’s opening ceremony concert. Lots of emotion, lots of energy, and fired up players will translate into mistakes and a higher scoring game. Mexico just far superior technically to the hosts, call it 3-2 Mexico.
The Uruguayans got into the World Cup defeating Costa Rica in a playoff eliminator. Diego Forlan is the best finisher you’ve never heard on and worth a flyer for top scorers. France here based on Henry’s “Hand of God II” and never played well in qualifiers. Injuries to France and bad Kharma gets the South American’s off to a fast start and the French headed for fast exit. Uruguay 2-0.
My pick to win the tournament: ARGENTINA
Longshots to make noise: Chile, Netherlands, Portugal
Good Luck and an enjoy a great event.
Hand of God II
Thursday, November 19th, 2009They say that if you’re not cheatin’, you’re not tryin’. That may be true but with a World Cup berth on the line, this is just outright criminal. Veteran move by Henry but if FIFA is to have ANY credibility whatsoever, it MUST order a replay of this game.
Should Ireland get a replay or should the result stand ???

When Women Soccer Players Attack !!!
Sunday, November 8th, 2009New Mexico Lady Lobo junior soccer player Elizabeth Lambert just might be the baddest woman in Women’s Collegiate sports. Check out this clip from the Mountain West Tournament semi-final won by BYU 1-0. Lambert made her presence felt throughout the contest finally getting a Yellow Card in the 77th minute.
Later, she was suspended “indefinitely” by the school. Just punishment ???

Italian Soccer Training
Friday, September 4th, 2009My father spent the final 25 years of his life in Italy and I lived there on and off from 1977-1991. Got to really enjoy and follow soccer while I was there. My father treated many of the great “stranieri” and consulted for AC Roma and Ternana. This one is old but still brings a smile to any afficionados face.
