2010 US Open Preview from Pebble Beach

2010 US Open from Pebble Beach, Par:71, 7040 Yards

This year’s US Open is wide open with better than 60 golfers with legit chances to win. The precision players will do very well here and the big bangers have no definitive edge like at The Masters. The greens are small and fast and you have to be straight off the tee with the ability to get up and down.

Phil Mickelson will suplant Tiger as #1 in the world with a win here. Lefty has been runner-up five times in the US Open and may be dialed in here as he has three wins in tour events at Pebble Beach. Mickelson will be penalized by the roughs if he’s too aggressive and no bargain at 7-1. Lets throw Phil and Tiger out.

The event sets up perfectly for players like Tim Clark (50-1 Bodog) and Geoff Ogilvy (50-1 Bodog). Clark is off a win in the “Fifth” major, The Players Championship, fourth on the tour in money, with five top ten finishes. Ogilvy is a lurker that hasn’t had an overly impressive 2010 but can hang around and make some noise on Sunday.

Other players with a shot at a price are Nick Watney (66-1 Bodog), Angel Cabrera (80-1 Bodog), and Brian Gay (100-1). I’ll use Clark and Cabrera as top plays and get a good dose of all five in the matchups.

No brain surgery in this year’s US Open. You don’t have to drive 350 to have a shot at Pebble Beach. You have to hit it straight like laying pipe, be handy around the greens and as always, have the putter working. Good Luck!

Tiger Woods is the first Billion-Dollar athlete !!!

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

According to Forbes magazine, Tiger Woods is now the first athlete with a billion dollars in career earnings. Tiger’s $10 million dollar bonus for winning the FedEx Cup sent El Tigre’s 2009 earnings over $100 million and send his career earnings into ten figures. Forbes had Woods culminative earnings at $895 million heading into 2009. Tiger joined the tour in 1996 bolstered by a $40 million-dollar deal with Nike and has won 14 majors, nine money titles, and nine Player of the Year titles. Just 33, Tiger should be good for his second billion by 45.

Second and third ???  Michael Jordan at $800 million and F1 driver Michael Schumacher at $700 million.

Here’s a look at the lighter side of Tiger Woods.

If you are worried about Tiger Woods

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

…….. DON’T BE !!!

If you are concerned about Tiger Woods not winning a major in 2009, giving up a Sunday 54 hole lead for the first in any tournament, or missing a seven-foot putt to get into the playoff at the Barclay …..
consider this (sent to me by good friend and ultimate Tiger Woods fan Larry Ness) …..

Tiger took off about two months after his dad died and returned for the 2006 US Open. He missed the cut. Since missng the 2006 US Open, he’s played in 40 PGA Tour stroke play events. I’m not counting the three match play events he played (he won once). He’s won 21 times, or 52.5 percent of his events. He’s finished second seven times and in the top-10, 35 times (that’s 87.5 percent!).

He’s finished in the top-25 in 38 of the 40 tournaments (that’s 95 percent), only failing to do so in the 2007 Players’ Championship (T-37) and his missed cut at the 2009 British Open. If Tiger’s “learning how to lose,” I must be missing something.

Note that Tiger’s 21 wins (in his last 40 events) are more wins than EVERY active player save Phil (36) and Vijay (34). Incredibly, only 28 players in PGA history have won more than 21 tournaments all-time, including Tiger himself with a modest 70.

Four of Tiger’s 20 wins have been majors (2006 British Open, 2006 PGA, 2007 PGA plus the 2008 US Open). How many active players have won more as many as four majors in their career? How about zero. Ernie, Padraig, Phil and Vijay each have three. How many players in PGA history have won more than four majors? How about 18, including Tiger with his modest total of 14.

Something tells me that Tiger is going to be OK !!!
